What gave us the idea for QuizMe?

quizMe started from a desire to learn Jiu-Jitsu. I was studying to move on to the next belt and that involves memorizing lots of moves. I needed a way to document all the different moves I wanted to learn, as well as a way to review them. I remembered that there was this concept of ‘spaced repetition’ that was floating around in my brain but which I never really looked into. So I did some research.

Spaced Repetition is the theory that you should recall something at the closest point to forgetting it. In other words, to best create the pathway in your brain, you should have to struggle a bit to recall it. We have all experienced this - we review our flashcards and we have them down solid. Then we come back the next day and we don’t remember them at all! Spaced repetition times our recall so that we review things at just the right time so that we optimize our time spent learning.

Back to Jiu-Jitsu. I have a busy life and so even though I am really committed to learning Jiu-Jitsu, I forget to study, it’s hard to remember what I have reviewed, when I reviewed it, etc. What if we could automate this process and optimize it? Fortunately, there is someone who has spent their career researching this and has created an algorithm for doing just this.

The SuperMemo algorithm, based on the research of Piotr Woźniak, implements spaced repetition based on how well you have answered a particular question. Based on your history of answers, it will create the optimal next review date for you. This prevents you from having to spend time studying that you don’t need to and make sure you recall information at the optimal time. quizMe implements an algorithm inspired by the SM-2 version of the SuperMemo algorithms. The special sauce we add is the notification system to let you know when it’s time to study.

There were several products out there that could do similar things, but we weren’t happy with any of them. At Liscio Apps, we think that software is often too complicated. We aim to create apps that are simple and easy to use. We applied this same philosophy when writing quizMe. We hope you will find quizMe adds value to your life with very little ramp up time. Happy learning!
